Products & Markets

The JOUAN brand high technology offer is one of the most extensive in the fields of sample preparation and preservation.

A world leader in such laboratory products, JOUAN shows the way with :

A range of 35 centrifuges of all types: ventilated, refrigerated and thermostated –
Micro to 6 litres at High Speed / Compact to 9.6 litres at Low Speed

Plus a host of associated products for the biology, chemistry and other labs:-

This global offer allows JOUAN to participate in three major sectors - industry, research and hospitals. All important disciplines are supported including biochemistry, microbiology, cell and molecular biology, blood transfusion, agri-industry, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, environmental studies and many others.

History

Moving into the 21st century as one of the world’s most dynamic scientific instrument manufacturers, Group JOUAN can count upon a long history of experience.

In 1919 when war had just ended in Europe, Constant JOUAN, researcher at the Pasteur Institute, decided to devote all of his time to the creation of new laboratory instruments and the JOUAN company was born.

His ingenuity and creativity ensured the rapid growth of the company. The first to adapt an electric motor to a centrifuge (until then manually operated), he opened new perspectives in research and diversified towards chemistry and biology.

Growth

Owned in the seventies by G.D. Searle, American inventor of the famed Aspartame molecule, JOUAN reached the pivotal stage in its long career when in 1979 it again achieved independence and developed its international activity based on centrifuges, ovens and incubators and an increasing range of other laboratory instruments.

For nearly 20 years JOUAN achieved 16% annual growth and saw its exports increase from 5% to over 80% of production.

Global Expansion

With its Group headquarters near Nantes, Western France, JOUAN has seen a rapid expansion in its structure. In 1981, ASTEL, the first separate manufacturing subsidiary, was established. Its main site at Château Gontier is now the largest of its type in Europe. Its secret is the mastery of all necessary technologies under one roof – sheet metalwork, microelectronics, painting, mechanics, assembly plus, of course, quality control. The St. Nazaire plant is equipped with the latest digital machine tools for production of rotors and accessories.

Going from strength to strength, Group JOUAN has extended its activity throughout the world. Major milestones include the establishment of companies in the USA in 1983, the UK in 1986, then Germany in 1990, the purchase of ALC, Italy in 1993 with its centrifuge and motor manufacturing plant, the Russian bureau in 1994, the creation in the Czech Republic in 1995 of a factory dedicated to refrigeration products, bureaux in the Ukraine and China… and it is not finished there!!!

The purchase of the laboratory division of PRECISION SCIENTIFIC, including the NAPCO brand, in the USA instantly boosted turnover by 35% and created the critical mass to open, in 1997, the JOUAN Global Center integrating manufacturing, marketing and sales. A state-of-the-art parallel plant with its French sister, the Global Center brought to 5 the number of Group production facilities around the globe, all working to the same stringent standards ensuring identical high quality, whatever the source.

Incorporation of ESI FLUFRANCE, France’s leading pure air instrument company, into the Group in 1997 again increased JOUAN’s market penetration, adding important new product expertise.

2000 has seen the incorporation of IME as a division of JOUAN. Consultant in quality management for the laboratory, IME provides documentation and procedures (in conjunction with the lab's management) and evaluates the subsequent operation of the lab to its quality system.

The major advance for Group JOUAN this year has been the purchase of HETO-HOLTEN, a Danish manufacturer of laminar air flow cabinets, refrigerated baths and circulators, freeze dryers and deep freezers, which serves the laboratory markets in the world with an extensive network of distributors and agents. HETO-HOLTEN further designs and installs clean rooms and other tailor made controlled environment rooms.

The end of 2000 saw the purchase of GIRA, specialist in laboratory robotics. Now renamed JOUAN ROBOTICS, this company will assist the Group in accelerating its penetration into the industrial and biotech markets and bring to the customer a total solution of robotic systems, instrumentation and software from a single supplier. This addition to the Group extends the number of production sites to 7.

In 2001, JOUAN NEDERLAND was created to bring a closer customer support to this region with both sales advice and service support.

October 2001 saw the new JOUAN CHINA office opened in Souzhou, China, bringing even closer cooperation with our customers in this important market.

Today, the Group is present in about 120 countries with around 300 distributors and agents; a total of 2000 colleagues involved in the sales and servicing of the extensive product range.

Development & Production

Major investment in research, development and manufacturing keeps JOUAN ahead of the field. With our philosophy that the machine must adapt to the man and not the contrary, advanced technology has been applied to simplify use, for example with the VIDEOsetTM interactive control screen and AUTO-LOCK® instant rotor exchange.

Attention to working comfort means that ergonomy is incorporated into the design at the earliest stages.

Top of the list at JOUAN is safety. This is why our instruments are designed to and tested against a wide range of national and international standards for the protection of the operator, the environment and the sample. Respect for the environment is one of the reasons why JOUAN was the first company in the world to receive the Greenstar Trophy for the use of CFC-free and non-polluting refrigerants.

Training

Total commitment to customer support is underlined by the officially registered JOUAN Training Centre where customers, in addition to sales and service teams are fully trained to deal with all needs.

Technical Support

A world-wide after sales service structure ensures that engineers are ready at all times to provide rapid, on-site back-up. Contracts for comprehensive maintenance and conformity to original specifications guarantee the optimum operating conditions for our wide range of products.

Quality

The one dominating theme which provides a thread throughout the growth and daily life of JOUAN is quality. A desire to achieve the best in all aspects of our company and its products has received international recognition with the certification of our French manufacturing plants to ISO9002 and of JOUAN to ISO9001 for all aspects from conception through development, sales and after sales service.

Quality from start to finish.
